Mohali : Ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner expressed confidence in his team’s chances, stating they are ready to take on India and win the trophy, even if it means breaking the hearts of billions of Indian fans. He acknowledged the added pressure on India to perform at home but emphasized that New Zealand is focused on executing its plans effectively.
Santner highlighted the importance of taking early Indian wickets, particularly in the top order, to control the game. He praised Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for his deadly yorkers and bouncers, which have yielded 10 wickets in the tournament so far, and acknowledged the challenge posed by India’s aggressive batting style that maintains high scoring from start to finish.
While he has not yet seen the pitch, Santner expects a high-scoring contest and stressed the significance of controlling the run rate. He noted that restricting India to around 220 runs, instead of 250, could significantly improve New Zealand’s chances of victory. He also praised Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy as a brilliant bowler capable of influencing the match if conditions favor spin.
Santner described the World Cup final as a different challenge compared to bilateral series, citing the pressure and one-match knockout nature. He stressed that the team’s focus remains on consistency, sticking to strategies, and executing plans on the field rather than being overwhelmed by the occasion.
Reflecting on New Zealand’s journey through the tournament, Santner noted that the team has faced and learned from numerous difficult situations, which prepares them to handle the intensity of the final. He underlined that while the match could see high scores, disciplined bowling and consistent performance are key.
Concluding his remarks, Santner said the final is about mindset, discipline, and sticking to the plan, stressing that every player must deliver under pressure. With both teams boasting strong line-ups, the final promises to be a thrilling contest, and Santner believes New Zealand is ready to rise to the occasion.
