Liverpool Eye FA Cup as Arne Slot Seeks Season Rescue

Liverpool’s Premier League title defence may be over, but all is not lost for manager Arne Slot, who now looks to the FA Cup to salvage the season. Three days after a stoppage-time defeat by Wolves left them sixth in the league, Liverpool returned to Molineux and secured a 3-1 victory, with goals from Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, and Curtis Jones, advancing to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Slot faces mounting pressure after a turbulent campaign, which began with high expectations following a £450m summer spending spree. Despite winning the Premier League in his first season, inconsistency and nine defeats in 12 matches between September and December derailed their domestic hopes. Still, Liverpool have shown resilience, losing only three of their 23 games since that poor run.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy emphasized that Slot needs tangible success to secure his position, pointing to the FA Cup or Champions League as crucial opportunities. “Slot’s still got a wonderful opportunity to do something special,” Murphy said, noting the need to cut out external noise and focus on rebuilding confidence within the squad.

Captain Virgil van Dijk echoed the importance of the FA Cup, describing it as a realistic chance for silverware this season. He highlighted the significance of maintaining focus, saying, “To get silverware is always our aim… hopefully we can keep going.”

With Liverpool trailing league leaders Arsenal by 19 points and out of the top five, the FA Cup represents the most attainable route to success. The Champions League last-16 tie against Galatasaray offers another opportunity, though Murphy believes it may be a tougher challenge.

Slot’s management has been tested, with only a few new signings meeting expectations and several key players underperforming. Murphy stressed that a strong cup run is vital: “For Slot, he is really needing something positive to end this season to—I think—keep him in a job.”

The upcoming weeks, with both the FA Cup and European fixtures, will be crucial for Liverpool and Slot as they seek to restore confidence, capture silverware, and prove that the season is not a write-off despite league struggles.
